Broadband Access: FTTP Is Changing the Game
Tuesday, March 8; 3:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.
Moderator: Chris Pfistner, Director, Global Access Business, NeoPhotonics Corp., USA
This exciting session features executives from telecom carriers and system and outside plant suppliers providing their views on the opportunities and challenges for FTTP around the world. Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) is transforming the broadband access market dynamics in several countries in Asia, particularly Japan. Japan is now entering a second phase of FTTP deployments shifting the network architecture from Point to Point (P2P) to Point to Multi Point (P2MP) networks. Now the technology is starting to gain momentum in North America. In North America and in Europe, small carriers, municipalities and real-estate developers have driven the majority of FTTP deployments thus far. This started to change in 2003 with the RBOCs in North America issuing a joint RFQ for large FTTP network builds. The issue of deploying FTTP networks leads to two key themes: new revenue streams enabled by new services and the cost for building the new infrastructure. While the debate on the former subject is likely to continue for some time, the discussion on the latter is changing rapidly since the cost of the equipment has come down significantly in recent years, driven largely by cost reductions in optical components and subsystems.

Delivering Convergence with Intelligent Ethernet Services
Wednesday, March 9; 1:30 p.m.–3:30 p.m.
Moderator: Mathew Steinberg, Director of Business Development, Ample Communications, USA
Voice, video and data convergence is resulting in new requirements for deployment of advanced services from the enterprise access point to the metro network core. Intelligent Ethernet services satisfy these new requirements using existing infrastructure to maximize the current network investment. This session will explore the implementation of Intelligent Ethernet services to maximize existing infrastructure from both the carrier and large enterprise perspective.

Moderator: Stagg Newman, Senior Practice Expert, McKinsey and Co., USA
This provocative session takes a longer term view of directions for the industry and what has to happen for the industry to revitalize the industry. Key topics addressed are:
- Implications of current industries, current business models and directions;
- Implications of the “fiber announcements of the telcos”;
- Comparison of telecommunications to other industries during transitional periods; and
- Changes in the telecommunications model going forward and its implications.

Global Market Potential—R&D or Reality?
Thursday, March 10; 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Moderator: Serge Melle, Vice President, Network Architecture, Infinera Corp., USA
This session explores the potential of recent and future technology innovations against current market requirements which seek to simplify networks and reduce operating costs. This session will also answer the question of whether these innovations will remain interesting R&D or become commercial reality in real-world applications. Insights and opinions will be provided from the viewpoints of service providers, component and system vendors, and industry analysts. Over the past decade the optical networking industry has seen tremendous scientific and technical innovation. Although the magnitude of new R&D funding has declined significantly over the past few years, disruptive innovation has continued, spurred by the need to provide meaningful end-user benefits. At the same time, the recent industry slow-down has challenged the viability of many previous technology innovations against current market requirements.
