Short Courses

General Information

Short Courses cover a broad range of topic areas at a variety of educational levels. The courses are taught by highly regarded industry experts on subjects such as free space optics, next-generation SONET, optical Ethernet, packaging and many more.

Short Courses are an excellent opportunity to learn about new products, cutting-edge technology and vital information at the forefront of communications. Instructors are given the option to indicate course level as Beginner (minimal to no training is necessary to understand course material), Advanced Beginner (an understanding of the topic is necessary to follow the course material) or Intermediate (prior knowledge of topic is necessary to appreciate the course material). In addition, Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available as well as opportunities to meet one of the key requirements to maintaining your PE license.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Demonstrate your commitment to education and advancement in the optical communications field by earning CEUs. Certificates awarding CEUs are presented to all individuals who complete a Short Course, CEU form and course evaluation. Forms will be available on-site.

Free Short Course Offer for Student Members
Student members of IEEE/ComSoc, IEEE/LEOS and OSA may now register for free for select Short Courses. To achieve the full value of attending a Short Course, we encourage these students to pre-purchase Short Course Notes for $15 at the time that they register for the course. The notes are a valuable take-home benefit; they contain formulas, reference lists and other information essential to fully understanding the course material. These notes are available only to attendees of the course, and there will be a very limited number of Short Course Notes for sale on-site. (Paid attendees and free students who pre-pay for notes are guaranteed a copy of the notes.)

Register for a Short Course NOW!
Student members are encouraged to visit the registration page after February 4 to sign up for a free Short Course and purchase the corresponding course notes. Free student registration is not available for hands-on courses, full-day courses or courses that are near capacity before the pre-registration deadline.

Prior Attendee Comments

Here are just a few of the many positive comments received from 2007 Short Course attendees.

“Great course to an introduction of fiber optic measurement. It was great working hands-on with the instructors.”
Attendee of SC101 Hands-on Workshop on Fiber Optic Measurements and Component Testing taught by Lorenz Cartellieri, Peter Schweiger, John Kim, Karl Merkel, Michael Kelly, Caroline Connolly and Richard Buerli

“The instructor is very knowledgeable and well organized. The course flowed very well, progressing smoothly over a large amount of information. I really like the additional information slides throughout course notes.”
Attendee of SC123 Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers and Raman Fiber Amplifiers taught by John Zyskind

“Very comprehensive. The speaker clearly has a broad and deep understanding of the course material and is able to effectively communicate the material.”
